Afghan Women’s Network Intensifies its Efforts to Negotiate Women’s Position at the National Peace Jirga and Upcoming Kabul Conference

More than 200 women representatives gathered in Kabul to make their voices heard and supported

In the wake of Peace Jirga and upcoming Kabul Conference, the meeting of 3rd April has been another landmark in the history of Afghan women’s long struggle to contribute to the national reconstruction and re-conciliation process. The Kabul Meeting of last week announced that

We welcome both upcoming events and reassure our full support and participation to any effort that brings peace, prosperity and security to the men, women and children of this country”.

The participants of the meeting issued a statement that emphasises the position of Afghan women that any decision regarding women in Afghanistan that does not adhere to/clashes with Afghan National Constitution, Declaration on Human Rights and International Conventions on Women’s Rights will not bring lasting peace in Afghanistan and that is why will not be supported by the women of Afghanistan.

The document issued, further reminds that the achievements on last 9 years of women’s rights must be endorsed and secured in all Afghan Peace and Security Accords and that the women’s participations in national policy formulation, implementation and its outreach is non- negotiable and it should be assured.

Gender Concerns International supports AWN’s initiative and it hopes that the conclusions drawn at the 3rd April meeting will be taken into consideration by both the Afghanistan Government and the international community.
