Gender Concerns International expresses solidarity with Tunisian women and human rights organizations after the assassination of opposition politician Chokri Belaid.
It is with great concern and sadness that Gender Concerns International has learned of the assassination of Tunisian opposition politician Chokri Belaid.
Mrs. Sabra Bano, director of Gender Concerns International, has spoken with partners and associates in Tunisia and has sent her condolences to Mrs. Basma Khalfaoui, the wife of Mr. Chokri Belaid.
Mrs. Basma Khalfaoui, a Lawyer by profession, is a well-respected member of our partner organization ATFD, a great supporter of women’s participation in democratic processes and promoter of a gender-balanced society. Gender Concerns International monitored the October 2011 elections with major women and human rights organisations in Tunisia and since then has been active in Tunisia and the wider region, supporting female leadership and democratic transformation together with national women and civil society organisations.
Gender Concerns International is deeply concerned about the assassination of Mr. Chokri Belaid, the Secretary General of the Democratic Patriots Party. He denounced political violence and was a strong advocate for democratic values in Tunisia. Gender Concerns International feels the need to express strong solidarity with Tunisian women, human rights organizations and the civil society.
The killing of Mr. Chokri Belaid is a major setback to those who support the process of achieving a gender-balanced democratic society in Tunisia. However, Gender Concerns International hopes that this great tragedy will have a catalyzing effect, pushing the establishment of a peaceful, secure and women inclusive democracy in Tunisia. In a message to Ms. Halima Jouini at ATFD and LTDH, and a close associate of Mrs. Basma Khalfaoui, Mrs. Sabra Bano affirmed Gender Concerns International’s warm support to the cause of women, human rights organizations and activists in Tunisia and the wider region.
