New Libyan government welcomed as an influence for women’s involvement in important governance decisions

Gender Concerns International, which conducted the Gender Election Monitoring (GEM) Mission in Libya, congratulates Libyan Prime Minister, Al Zeidan and members of his cabinet on the formation of the country’s new government.

Director of the organisation, Sabra Bano said: “We were gratified to have such an important and unique task as gender monitoring in this first free democratic election in Libya for 42 years. We sincerely hope that this new government will be an influence for women’s participation in important governance decisions.”

She welcomed the appointment to Libya’s new General National Congress of two women ministers, Ikram Abdulsalam Imam, and Kamila Khamis Al-Mazini, who have been nominated respectively for the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Social Affairs.
“As a participant in these elections we endorse the message to the Libyan Government from the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Mr Tarek Mitri, for Libya’s success in facing its many challenges. Not least of which is capacity building for women to ensure that they will be actors of change,” Ms Bano said.
“Our recently released report on the GEM Mission in Libya makes a number of recommendations including the staging of country wide workshops with men and women on the importance of female participation in the effective functioning of democracy. We need to ensure a balance of women and men at all levels of decision making including the Electoral Commission,“ she said.
