International Afghanistan Regional Conference

Expected Hague Declaration and the Prospects for the Women in the Region

Gender Concerns International hopes that the women in the region will benefit from Regional Comprehensive Strategy and their interest will not be compromised but safeguarded for the attainment of peace, security and development for all in the region.

As Post Hague Declaration, Gender Concerns International will organise a conference of the women leaders and the main stakeholders in Gender and Development & Security Issues from Afghanistan and its neighbouring countries in Kabul in early June 2009. The Hague: The significance of the International Conference on Afghanistan: a Comprehensive Strategy in a Regional Context to be held in The Hague, The Netherlands on 31st March 2009 is high in the context of Afghan policy orientation of president Obama’s administration. Thus the expected Hague declaration of 31st March would have a far deeper and a much lasting impact on the policy intervention and regional interaction among the key stakeholders involved in the process of reconstruction of Afghanistan. The International Conference will be focussing on the analysis of the current political, security and development issues faced by international community in Afghanistan by taking the regional context into account. Gender Concerns International, as a Dutch Gender and Development organisation has been one of the major Dutch NGOs involved in preparation, implementation and monitoring processes of Dutch National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325.

Since past few years the organisation has done major lobby and advocacy work in Europe regarding the position of women in the region (India, Pakistan and Afghanistan) and has developed contacts with local women’s organisations, governments and Pakistan and Afghan Embassies in the Netherlands. Recently organisation has also initiated contacts with the Embassy of Iran and the United States... Gender Concerns International supports regional approach in resolving peace and security issues in the region. However it cautions the leaders of the International community to safeguard the interest of the women in the region with care as often in military deployment and/or negotiations with various conflict groups, women’s interest are compromised.

In the current climate of political change coming from the United States, and in consideration with the relevance of the International Conference on Afghanistan that will be held in The Hague, Gender Concerns International is particularly keen that the interest of the women in the region will be kept as an integral part of the “Comprehensive Strategy” which will be discussed by the international community in the Hague.

For this reason, as Post Hague declaration, Gender Concerns International will organise a conference of women leaders and the main stakeholders in Gender and Peace & Security issues from Afghanistan and in its neighbouring countries in Kabul in early June 2009.
