Turkey: Women represent only 20% of MPs in newly elected parliament

On Sunday, 29 May, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was declared the winner of the runoff elections in Turkey, with 52.14% of the votes.

During the elections, women’s political representation has made a slight improvement, following nonrepresentational candidate lists. However, despite the increase in elected female lawmakers, their number remains disappointingly low as out of 600 seats, only 121 are won by women in comparison with the previous 100 female parliamentary seats.

We stand in solidarity with women in Turkey and affirm our commitment to supporting the electoral gender equality.
