Egypt: Campaign Against Draft Constitution Sheds Light On Women Rights

Rights groups and initiatives launched a new campaign on Monday to express their objection to the draft constitution and raise awareness on basic rights.

"Your constitution is void" is the campaign adopted by the Fouada Watch initiative who has planned nationwide activities from November 15 until November 25 to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Under the slogan "Together, women and men, we write our constitution", the campaign aims to shed light on women rights and the importance of the role of women in society during Egypt's transformation.

The campaign will demand that Egypt's new constitution, that's currently in the making, clearly guarantees equality for women, criminalizing all types of violence against them.

General coordinator of Fouada Watch, Fathy Farid, said in a statement obtained by Aswat Masriya that the campaign will raise awareness on the rights of different factions and the negative impacts of sexual violence against women on society.

He called on organizations and political parties to participate in the campaign and support the march scheduled for November 25 heading from the Journalists' Syndicate to Egypt's upper house of parliament (where the constituent assembly convenes).
