Tunisia: end of conference on women's participation in public life

Tunis — Interim Prime Minister Hammadi Jebali expressed commitment to follow up the recommendations of the international conference on women's participation in public life.

Addressing on Tuesday the closing session of the conference, he spoke notably of devising a qualification programme which would enable to increase the skills of women both as candidates and voters ahead of next elections.

Participants called for enacting laws inciting to women's participation in political life and favouring their access to decision-making posts, insisting on the principle of equality between men and women and of quotas and pointing out the obstacles of poverty and illiteracy among rural women.

The recommendations also focused on rehabilitating the image of women in the media and developing socially-aware culture, starting from schools.

Besides, the PM stressed that it is out of the question to go back over Tunisian women's gains or Tunisia's international commitments, quoting in particular the ratification of the UN convention on women's fundamental rights and that relating to the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.

The conference provided the occasion to launch the campaign of support to women's participation in public life and allowed to exchange expertise with women participants of several countries (Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Finland, France Iran, Spain Sweden, Germany and South Africa).
