Libya: Re-opening of German Embassy in Tripoli positive sign for upcoming elections

On the 9th of September 2021, the German Embassy in Libyan capital Tripoli was reopened in the presence of German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, after being closed since 2014. Gender Concerns International congratulates the German Embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and looks forward to a fruitful collaboration in light of the upcoming Libyan elections. We are eager to return to the ground and continue to support women’s rights like we have done before.

The presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya, set for the 24th of December 2021, have been an occasion for several Western Embassies in Libya to call on Libyan actors and main stakeholders to conduct "inclusive, free and fair" elections. According to the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, the upcoming elections form an opportunity to ‘’move gradually and convincingly into a more stable, representative and civilian track’’.
