In honor of International Environmental Education Day, Gender Concerns International celebrates the vital role women play in making our planet more sustainable, a focus closely tied to GCI’s target area of Gender and Environmental Sustainability. From grassroots education to policy and corporate leadership, women are central to shaping our response to the climate crisis.
This leadership is reflected in the data. According to GreenBiz, in 2024, women made up 63 percent of sustainability executives, with even higher representation among Chief Sustainability Officers at Fortune 500 companies. These numbers underscore that women are not only participating in sustainability efforts but leading them.
One of the most recognized figures in global climate action is Christiana Figueres. As former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, she helped guide the negotiations that led to the 2015 Paris Agreement and continues to advocate for urgent, hopeful climate action through her work with Global Optimism and Outrage & Optimism.
Let us celebrate these achievements by committing to empowering more women as sustainability leaders and working together for a more sustainable 2026.
