Gender Concerns International collaborates with EU delegation to Libya to celebrate International Women’s Day

 

Gender Concerns International together with the European Union Delegation to Libya commemorated International Women’s Day on Saturday 8 March with an event in Tripoli. A written message by, European Union High Representative Catherine Ashton, was read during the event, supporting women to assert a larger role in society. More than 400 people were present at the occasion to recognise Libyan women’s progress so far, as well as the work that remains to be done to guarantee their rights and role in the country’s future.

 

Ambassador Nataliya Apostolova, Head of the EU Delegation to Libya, one of the featured guest speakers, stressed the commitment of the Delegation to promote the role and capabilities of Libyan women.

 

Ms. Sabra Bano, Director of Gender Concerns International, called for the creation of a platform of civil society organisations and women activists that can influence public policy and parliamentary decision-making for the inclusion and implementation of women’s constitutional rights.

 

Other remarks delivered during the celebration highlighted the importance of the overall function of women in society, with a focus on increasing the role of women in political, cultural, economic and social life. There was also encouragement for conditions and determination for women to hold leading public offices.

 

The event at the Hotel Al Wadan was attended by members of the Libya General National Congress, Tourism Minister Emam Bash, Former Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagour, Ambassadors to Libya and members of various civil society organisations.

 

At the close of the event, 103 floating candles were released into the air to mark the 103rd International Women’s Day.
