On 8 March 2014, the 103rd International Women’s Day will be commemorated world-wide in linking the progress of today’s women’s movement to the bravery and determination of those who fought for women’s human rights in the industrializing world of the early 1900s.

Women in countries where the Arab Spring has seen an emerging wave in the women’s movement will mark this day with dignity and determination. Libyan women are today playing a crucial role in country’s democratic transformation. They are keen to take up more leadership roles in decision-making and legislative bodies.

Libyans have just elected members of their Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA) on 20 February 2014.

Gender Concerns is launching its project “Dastoor” to strengthen women’s role and responsibilities in the constitutional drafting processes. Dastoor will also help build their capacities to meet challenges of the implementation of the constitution. The Project is supported by the European Union and will be launched on the 103rd Int’l Women’s Day to acknowledge and support women, civil society organisations, the CDA and other stakeholders who are looking towards an equal and positive future for all citizens of Libya.

The event will be chaired by H.E. Nataliya Apostolova, EU Ambassador to Libya. A special message from EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security, Catherine Ashton, will also be delivered for this special occasion. A following panel discussion is central to the event program. And as a symbol of more than 100 years of progress, and commitment to work still to be done, 103 flying candle lights will be launch to mark the event.
