Gender Concerns International and Partners to Present
Preliminary Findings of Gender Election Monitoring
(GEM) Mission

Radisson Blu, Tripoli, 9 July 2012, 10:00 am

The Gender Concerns International Election Monitoring (GEM) Mission to Libya led by Sabra Bano welcomes you to a press conference at 10.00 am on Monday, 9 July 2012 at the Radisson Blu, Tripoli. The GEM Mission will be issuing preliminary findings based on observations of the elections for a General National Congress on 7 July 2012 from a distinctly gender perspective.

Yesterday in the Al Kheima hall of the Radisson Blu Hotel, 25 women from across Libya sat centre stage to address the audience as newly trained election monitors for the Gender Election Monitoring Mission to Libya. The event marked the launch of the Gender Election Monitoring (GEM) Mission initiative from international gender and development organization Gender Concerns International and its partners the Libyan Network for Civil Society and the Libyan Women’s Union.

Following two days of intensive training, the 25-strong team of local Libyan election monitors will combine with international observers from The Netherlands, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Australia, Tunisia and Germany to monitor the electoral process from a distinctly gender perspective.

The Gender Concerns International Gender Election Monitoring (GEM) Team will be led by Director, Sabra Bano and will be supported by local and international support staff from the Gender Concerns International local office based in Tripoli. Tasked with monitoring the full experience of women before, during and after the elections, the GEM Team will apply a sophisticated gender analysis to assess participation of women before, during and after the General National Congress elections on 7 July 2012. The GEM Team will highlight achievements, identify problems and gaps and make strong recommendations for improvements.
