Gender Concerns Embarks on Myanmar Election Assessment Mission

(Gender Concerns delegation members met with the Union Election Commission on 30 April)

A delegation from the Gender Concerns International headquarters office in The Hague has embarked on a Pre-Election Need Assessment Mission to Myanmar. Myanmar, a transitioning democracy, is organising General Elections for Parliament this fall and Gender Concerns is exploring the possibility of a Gender Election Observation Mission (GEOM), as previously conducted in several different countries including Libya and Tunisia.

During this initial visit the delegation is meeting with potential stakeholders to discuss opportunities, needs and possible impacts of a mission. Gender Election Observation Missions focus on monitoring the access, involvement and participation of women in political processes leading up to and after Election Day.

This is an exciting step for Gender Concerns International, and is part of our ongoing initiatives to support the rights of women around the globe.
