Gender and Crime

As a reaction to the Campaign "Crime has No Gender," launched by Europol today, Gender Concerns International expresses its concern over the campaign title as it is misleading and exaggerates the scale of criminality associated with female offenders.

The organization considers it important not to forget that women are the main victims of violence and crime committed against them worldwide, including Europe. We admit that the initiative seems to challenge the stereotypes and help raise public awareness towards crimes committed by women.

However, the campaign's focus appears to be contradictory as it suggests that new policy prescriptions might be needed to deal with increasing female criminality. This is clearly in contrast with the campaign's focus advocating that "Crime has No Gender."

Crime convicts can be of any gender but crime widely remains gendered!
