Egypt: NGOs ask for more political participation for women

A number of non-governmental organizations asked on Monday for a decent representation of women in parliament and other elected bodies.

The NGOs issued a pro-women rights document asking for clear constitutional articles on women, granting them the same rights and duties as men and banning all types of physical and psychological violence against them.

The document stressed that women have achieved rights through years of fighting for them, adding that the fight continued during and after last year's uprising to topple Mubarak.

"Women died for the revolution to prevail, as youths have", the document stated.

It considered the constitution issue a decisive one in Egypt's history as it will determine the rights and duties of Egyptians, men and women.

It pointed to the importance of having a constitution that allows women to practice their political rights, granting them equality in political participation.
