New art exhibition uncovers Yemeni women

“The Threads of Life,” an exhibition of artwork displaying Yemeni women’s connection to fabrics as a form of self-expression, opened Thursday at the Spanish ambassador’s home.  The exhibit’s launch coincided with Spain’s National Day.

Bushra Al-Fusail, the artist, said, “The idea of the exhibition was very different in terms of the display of the pictures. I started working three months ago, and I worked on each picture uniquely in order to create a short story so that the picture as a whole highlights a particular aspect of the Yemeni woman.”

Al-Fusail said the choice of fabrics reflects women’s lives.

"When the Yemeni woman is happy, unhappy, worrying or anxious, she could hide these feelings through her clothing or she could reveal her feelings through the fabrics she puts on."

She said all the scenes depicted in the exhibition represent real situations faced by Yemeni women.  These include social challenges and restrictions experienced while fighting hurdles through a trust in God and in personal capacities.
