New President of the EU Commission, Dr. Von der Leyen will lead the yet most Gender Equal Commission

Congratulations to Dr. von der Leyen who officially assumes the position of a new President of EU Commission and will lead the most gender equal Commission that the EU has ever seen with its 13 out of 27 Commissioners being women.

Former German Minister of Defence, Dr. Ursula von der Leyen is the first female President of the EU Commission and has already proposed her European ‘Green Deal’ to combat climate change and make the EU a more carbon neutral zone.

Gender Concerns is pleased to see that such an important European institution will be lead by a Female Leader for the next term. Dr. von der Leyen has previously held several ministerial positions as part of Chancellor Merkel’s cabinet. As a Minister of Defence, she was the first women ever to hold this position within the German government.

There is hope that female leadership within the EU institutions is slowly advancing towards gender parity within the highest political institutions.

Former EU Commissions had a maximum of 32% women in their ranks, seeing only a slow increase from 25% in 2003 to 32% in 2018. However, the new commission reaches a quota of nearly 50%.
